Trump’s China tariff hike will hit Ford, GM and billions of dollars in auto parts

DETROIT — U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday announced additional 10% tariffs on Chinese imports, affecting a small number of U.S. cars. But the tariffs also affect auto parts, which could make already high car prices even higher for consumers.

In recent years, the U.S. has imported about $15.4 billion to $17.5 billion worth of transportation products from China each year, including $9 billion to $10 billion a year in parts and accessories for cars, tractors and other specialty vehicles, according to the U.S. International Trade Commission.

The biggest impact on cars will be Ford Motor’s Lincoln Nautilus and General Motors’ Buick Envision. Last year, 88,515 Chinese-made cars were sold in the U.S., of which 83,884, or 95%, were crossovers.

“The biggest hits have been primarily GM and Ford in terms of sales,” said Jeff Schuster, vice president of automotive research at GlobalData. “Our domestic companies have taken the brunt of the impact, at least in terms of vehicle sales… but the impact can be mitigated to some extent.”

Other automakers, such as Volvo, owned by China’s Geely, and its electric vehicle subsidiary Polestar, import far fewer vehicles into the U.S. They have also shifted production plans to reduce the number of vehicles they import from China. This is especially true for electric vehicles, given that the Biden administration imposed a 100% tariff on electric vehicles from China last year.

New Ford Chief Financial Officer Shirley House said Wednesday that the automaker will “evaluate” the situation with tariffs on Chinese products, “including China’s response, and assess whether it affects” the company’s import and export strategy.

Spokesmen for Ford and GM declined to comment on possible changes in production or prices for their vehicles made in China. Volvo and Polestar have not yet responded to requests for comment.

According to GlobalData, consumer cars made in China will account for just 0.6% of new car sales in the U.S. (about 16 million) in 2024. That’s about the same number of cars imported from the U.K., Sweden and Slovakia.

Tariffs on Canada and Mexico, which accounted for 23.4% of U.S. car sales last year, will have a bigger impact on the U.S. auto market, GlobalData reported.

“While the number of cars imported from China is small, auto parts imports are worth about $15 billion to $20 billion per year, according to the U.S. International Trade Commission, and China is an important part of the battery/energy storage supply chain (especially LFP batteries for utility-scale energy storage),” Goldman Sachs analyst Mark Delaney said in an investment note on Sunday.

It’s unclear how much the tariffs will affect batteries or raw materials for electric vehicles, which have been slower to adopt than expected.

But many U.S. electric vehicles use a significant portion of parts from China, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. They include the Genesis G80 EV (25%); the Hyundai Kona EV (50%) and Hyundai Ioniq 5 N (30%); the Kia EV9 (35%) and Niro Electric (25%); the Nissan Ariya EV (40%); the Toyota bZ4x EV (20%) and RAV4 PHEV (20%); and the Volkswagen ID Buzz EV (25%).

The automotive association is “concerned” about tariffs in general, said Mike Jackson, executive director of original equipment supplier strategy and research at MEMA. He said that while an additional 10% tariff on China would not have as big an impact as the tariffs imposed on North America, it would increase costs.

“It’s a challenge. It means higher costs, and those costs have to be borne by us,” Jackson told CNBC in an interview on the sidelines of the Chicago Federal Reserve’s auto conference in Detroit on Wednesday. “Obviously, China continues to contribute very valuable content. They’ve optimized it in electronics and everything.”

Whether automakers decide to pass on the increased costs to consumers, change sourcing or take other actions remains to be seen.

Passing the costs on to consumers could spell trouble for sales. New car prices remain historically high at about $50,000, according to Cox Automotive.

“There’s no single item coming out of China that’s going to be impacted by this tariff that people are going to say, ‘Oh no, this thing is going to screw everything up’ … but they’re going to drive up costs,” said Stephanie Brinley, lead automotive analyst at S&P Global Mobility. “It goes to a broader issue, a broader pricing issue.”

Such price increases could hurt U.S. new-car sales, which S&P Global Mobility had forecast before the tariffs were imposed, Brinley said.

The record-breaking box office performance of Nezha 2 may seem surprising. But it shouldn’t be.

BEIJING — For someone who lived in China before the pandemic, the success of the animated film “Nezha 2” was more of an industry milestone than a surprise.

In 2023, just as coronavirus restrictions were lifted, domestic animation was gaining momentum, with hits like “Chang’an,” which retells the life of the Chinese poet Li Bai from the perspective of his friends. As the only animated film in China’s top 10 films of the year, it took in about $250 million, according to Maoyan box office data.

The production team behind “Chang’an,” Light Chaser Animation, works mostly out of an old white building on the outskirts of Beijing. The building has high ceilings, stairways that wind through the building, connecting multiple floors and rooms, and a gym.

When I visited this week, some animators worked on computers in the dark, racing against time to finish cinematic lighting effects for scenes in the film that will be released this summer. Others designed ancient Chinese robes, detailed eyebrows and reconstructed buildings.

“This place isn’t big enough anymore,” Yu Zhou, the studio’s president, said in Mandarin, which CNBC translated into English.

He said the 380-employee company needs to hire at least 100 more people next year to keep up with its new production schedule: releasing two films a year starting in 2026, compared with one a year currently. Artificial intelligence can only be a tool for now, he said. Light Chaser plans to move into its new office in the second half of this year.

The studio sticks to a three-year production plan for all the films it’s making. Yu said they try to imagine the future and whether 20 million to 30 million people will watch the film when it’s released. “Will this story be successful in three years?”

Yu said “Ghost Temple Strange Stories,” due to be released this summer, retells “Chinese ghost stories.” He said the studio is in talks with “mainstream Hollywood studios” about releasing the film in theaters overseas, including in North America, at the same time as it’s released in China.

Speaking about the studio’s appeal to global audiences, Yu said Light Chaser Animation’s Green Snake — a retelling of a Chinese legend partly set in a futuristic city — performed well on Netflix after its 2021 release, ranking in the top 10 non-English content for three weeks.

Among other animated titles in the works, video streaming company iQiyi is producing Mr. Zhong, which is expected to be released in China this year. The company’s senior vice president, Yaning, said Chinese animation has begun to break its “childish” image and is developing into an industry that is expanding into movie merchandise and games.

Recent history

Chinese animated films have only started to make a splash in the last decade.

“In the history of Chinese animation, there has never been a film like Big Fish and Begonia… This bold, thrilling fantasy adventure is unique in terms of Chinese animated films,” entertainment industry magazine Variety wrote after the film’s 2016 release.

The film was produced by Beijing Enlight Media. This year’s Ne Zha 2 is from the same producer as 2019’s Ne Zha 1 — which topped China’s box office that year.

Deep Sea, from Beijing studio OctMedia, won acclaim in early 2023 for its dreamy, pastel-hued depiction of a young girl’s journey to healing after being abandoned by her mother.

Liu Anxing, a manager at a cinema in Chengdu, told CNBC that while popularity doesn’t always translate into box office revenue, Ne Zha succeeded in part because it appealed to audiences of all ages. Liu said he’s proud of the achievements of China’s animation industry, but he doesn’t expect another blockbuster like Ne Zha to happen anytime soon — at least not until Ne Zha 3 is released in 2028.

Nezha 2 was released in China in late January as one of six films released over the week-long Lunar New Year holiday, which it accounted for half of the holiday box office, according to Maoyan. After its release in North America on February 14, Maoyan data showed that the film beat Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” to become the world’s highest-grossing animated film with box office revenue of more than 13 billion yuan (1.79 billion U.S. dollars).

Strategy and planning

Unlike Light Chaser Film and Television, which focuses on in-house production, the producers of “Nezha 2” rely on different studios. The director is from Chengdu’s Keke Cartoon, while Beijing’s Enlight Media is the main producer and distributor of the show. Chinese official media said that nearly 140 companies were involved in the production of the show.

State media also highlighted how government subsidies have helped support domestic animation from Chengdu to Qingdao. Beijing formulated a national plan in 2021 to “build China into a film power” by 2035, including a requirement to produce 50 films a year, each of which has box office revenue of at least 100 million yuan.

Jonathan Clements, author of “Animation: A History,” warned that the overproduction of films could bring unpleasant shocks to studios and investors. “Animation consumers themselves are a resource that needs to be carefully managed,” he said.

Clements added that unlike Disney blockbusters that have made more than $1 billion in multiple countries, Ne Zha 2 has done so largely because of sales in the Chinese market. “You don’t have to worry about whether your story, your characters or your attitudes will be shown in other countries.”

China’s plan also stipulates that domestic films account for no less than 55% of annual box office revenue.

After Hollywood movies were allowed into China, domestic audience interest gradually waned. Maoyan said Godzilla x Kong was the only movie to make the top 10 last year. Oppenheimer failed to make the top 20 Chinese box office in 2023, and Barbie lagged even further behind.

In 2019, Avengers: Endgame ranked third in the domestic box office rankings, behind Chinese sci-fi blockbuster The Wandering Earth and the first Ne Zha, according to Maoyan data.

Many Chinese animated TV series draw their characters and plots from stories created online by little-known authors. China Literature, the operator of a large user-generated content app, said 15 of the 20 most-watched web animation series in the first half of last year were adapted from content on its platform. In the past few years, the company has also begun putting adaptations on YouTube to expand its audience.

Chinese creators are also using generative AI for filmmaking. Short video streaming app Kuaishou is about to launch a seven-episode miniseries, “New World Installation,” which is mainly produced using the company’s Kling AI video generation technology. Director Chen Xiangyu said the team only needed to feed a simple script to the AI ​​model without drawing characters.

Using hybrid magnetic resistance technology to promote permanent magnetic traction, come to Qingdao to experience the “permanent magnetic” aura of Huichuan Jingwei Track

Jingwei Rail, a subsidiary of Inovance Technology, has currently won bids for traction system projects for 19 subway lines in 8 cities in China (6 of which are fully automatic driving), and has won bids for 3,320 vehicles (1,074 of which are fully automatic driving). The earliest line to be put into operation is Suzhou Metro Line 2, which has been operating safely for 9 years.

Subway permanent magnet synchronous motor (high-efficiency hybrid reluctance)

This series of traction motors are permanent magnet synchronous, self-ventilated and cooled closed motors, using multi-layer magnetic circuit technology; the traction power can cover 190-275kW, meeting the application of 80-120km/h subway A/B type vehicles and 140~160km/h urban trains.

Main features and advantages:

Wide-area high efficiency, safe and reliable, simple maintenance

■ The highest efficiency can reach 97.5%, and the area with efficiency greater than 90% exceeds 88%,

■ Compared with the traditional asynchronous motor traction system, the measured energy saving rate is 16%-20%. If the subway line is equipped with a ground energy feedback device, the comprehensive energy saving rate is expected to exceed 30%, and each train can save about 3 to 4 million yuan in electricity bills during its entire life cycle.

■ It adopts a multi-layer magnetic circuit structure with low back electromotive force, which reduces the risk of failure under extreme working conditions and improves the safety of the motor.

Metro permanent magnet direct drive traction motor

The number of poles of this permanent magnet synchronous direct drive motor is 12. Due to the use of the new silicon carbide technology, the motor achieves natural cooling. The motor is designed for subway vehicles and meets the requirements of IEC 60349-4. It adopts the shaft-holding installation method and is directly installed on the axle to drive an axle on the bogie.

Main features and advantages:

■ High-voltage silicon carbide (SiC) devices are used to replace traditional IGBTs, which realizes the miniaturization, modularization and integration of the converter, and increases the switching frequency, reduces the output voltage harmonics, and reduces the loss of the motor;

■ Due to the use of direct-drive motors, gearboxes and couplings are eliminated, which improves the overall efficiency of the transmission system and the energy saving rate of the system;

■ Thanks to the advanced natural cooling design of the motor, the weight of the motor is less than that of the traditional asynchronous motor plus gearbox and coupling, making the energy saving effect of the whole vehicle more significant;

■ Due to the closed structure of the direct-drive motor, the motor is in a relatively low-speed operation state, and there is no gearbox and internal fan, the system noise is reduced by 20dB, which improves the comfort of passengers;

■ The closed structure direct-drive motor with natural cooling is used, which reduces the daily cleaning and gearbox oil change work, and reduces the daily maintenance workload.

Silicon carbide power module

This product is used in the permanent magnet direct drive motor traction system. It integrates a three-phase inverter bridge, drive circuit, high-voltage bus circuit and filter, etc., forming a fully functional three-phase inverter that can drive a motor to work.

Main features and advantages:

■ The module uses high-voltage silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET devices to replace traditional IGBTs, realizing the miniaturization, modularization and integration of the converter.

■ Based on the excellent characteristics of SiC devices, the converter increases the switching frequency, reduces the output voltage harmonics, and reduces the loss of the motor, which helps to achieve low noise, light weight, high efficiency and easy maintenance of the motor.

Permanent magnet synchronous traction motor for trams

This traction motor is a permanent magnet synchronous, 44-pole, water-cooled closed motor that meets the requirements of IEC 60349-4 and is powered by a permanent magnet traction inverter. The motor directly drives the vehicle wheelset through a clutch to provide power for the vehicle.

Main features and advantages:

Energy-saving, high efficiency, low noise, easy maintenance

■ The overall efficiency of the transmission system has been improved, and the system energy-saving effect is significant. Each permanent magnet direct drive motor drives one wheel, so that the vehicle has a better low-floor layout and small curve passing performance;

■ The direct drive motor adopts a closed structure, the motor is in a relatively low-speed operation state, there is no gearbox, and water cooling is used, which improves passenger comfort and reduces daily maintenance workload.

High-frequency auxiliary converter

Main features and advantages:

■ Strong redundancy: Each auxiliary converter box is equipped with 2 independent auxiliary inverter units and chargers. The 2 chargers in each auxiliary converter box are also connected in parallel for output, which improves the redundancy of battery charging and simplifies the wiring of the whole vehicle;

■ Fast grid connection: The 4 auxiliary inverter units adopt non-communication fast grid-connected power supply technology. Regardless of whether there is network communication or not, the grid connection operation of the auxiliary inverter of the entire train can be completed within 2 seconds;

■ Lightweight: The high-frequency soft switching technology is adopted, and the size of the transformer is significantly reduced;

■ Safety: The AC output adopts a three-phase four-wire system, and the neutral line ungrounded solution (IT system) is recommended, and an insulation detection device is configured in the auxiliary converter;

PITreader Authorization Management System

PILZ’s PITreader Authorization Management System is a comprehensive security access protection system that covers authority management, safety interlocking, protection locking and information display functions. The authorization management system can identify and judge the authority data written by the RFID electronic key, and complete the corresponding authorization management according to the authority data, thereby helping users complete tasks related to factory and machine access rights.

PITreader supports Modbus/TCP communication and REST API application interface. Each RFID key has its own “unique” security feature code. The authority keys are divided into pre-configured keys 1 to 5 and custom keys. The host computer can read the data to realize authority management, blacklist list, event tracing and other functions, effectively improving the management capabilities of production operations.

ABB e-Mobility and YKC Cloud Fast Charging jointly build a charging station on Shanghai Huqingping Highway to create a new smart charging ecosystem

ABB Electric Transportation provided 20 ABB Terra CA 182 series DC charging solutions for the Shanghai Huqingping Highway Charging Station, bringing car owners a more convenient, fast and efficient charging experience.

ABB Electric Transportation and YKC Cloud Fast Charging jointly completed the construction, installation and maintenance of the station.

ABB Electric Transportation invested in YKC Cloud Fast Charging Pre-C round in 2022, laying the foundation for jointly building a charging network.

Driven by policies and markets such as carbon neutrality and new infrastructure, the transportation industry, as one of the main sources of carbon emissions, is actively transforming towards a green and intelligent direction. As the process of automobile electrification continues to accelerate, the corresponding supporting charging infrastructure has also ushered in a new round of development peak.

Recently, ABB e-Mobility and YKC Cloud Fast Charge established the first high-power DC charging station in Shanghai, the YKC Cloud Fast Charge Shanghai-Qingping Highway Charging Station. This is another milestone cooperation between the two parties since ABB e-Mobility completed its investment in YKC Cloud Fast Charge Pre-C in 2022. The two parties will take this opportunity to combine their advantageous resources to strengthen cooperation and communication, jointly promote the construction of charging infrastructure, optimize the industrial layout, and continuously empower green and low-carbon travel and transportation carbon neutrality.

The YKC Cloud Fast Charge Shanghai-Qingping Highway Charging Station is located on Shanghai-Qingping Highway, backed by Hongqiao Airport. ABB e-Mobility provides 20 Terra CA 182 series DC charging solutions for the station, which can meet the charging needs of different types of electric vehicles such as taxis/online car-hailing, logistics vehicles, and buses, and provide car owners with safe, reliable, intelligent and convenient charging services. The Terra CA 182 series is a new DC charging system solution released by ABB Electric Transportation in 2022. It has a rated power of 180kW and an ultra-wide voltage of 200V-1000V. It has strong adaptability and can cover about 99% of the vehicle models on the market. The charging success rate can reach more than 95%, greatly improving the asset operation efficiency of the station. At the same time, the Terra CA 182 series also has orderly charging management on the local and platform side, which can not only adjust the power load, but also achieve friendly complementarity with the local power grid. The charging pile has its own remote monitoring and diagnosis function, which can quickly locate on-site needs, can be remotely upgraded through the platform, reduce on-site operation and maintenance time, and thus improve the operation efficiency of the station.

Providing the public with a better charging environment, accelerating the layout of energy replenishment, and promoting the high-quality development of the new energy industry are the common cooperation visions of ABB Electric Transportation and YKC Cloud Fast Charging. Integration into Experion PKS

Safety Manager™ supports the integration of Safety Manager into Experion™ PKS which unifies Honeywell’s safety controller with its equally reliable Experion platform. The integration is realized through the Safety Manager Universal Safety Interface (USI) via High Speed Ethernet (HSE) on the Fault Tolerant Ethernet (FTE) layer, which is placed in the control processor of the Safety Manager Controller. This USI module makes Safety Manager an integrated part of the Experion architecture, which means that Safety Manager related information can easily be exchanged between Safety Manager and Experion. This allows information to be shared and made available on the Experion Server displays.

Safety Manager integrates the sequence-of-event (SOE) features as supported by Safety Manager into the Experion server. Safety Manager supports SOE for digital inputs and outputs, analog inputs and outputs, and marker points. Each tag name that has been “SOE-enabled” is time-stamped by the Safety Manager controller and reported to the Experion Server, where it is incorporated into the standard Experion Server SOE list which allows for improved search, filter and automated archive functionality. Standard SOE displays are available to view the events as they are reported.

PlantScape Integration

Safety Manager™ supports the integration of Safety Manager into PlantScape, which combines Honeywell’s safety controller with its equally reliable hybrid control system. Safety Manager Controller alarm status.

Data written to the Safety manager Controller is available in the Safety Manager control program via digital and numerical input variables, which allow the user to define the conditions of use in the control strategy.

Fire and Gas Safety Solution

Honeywell Safety Manager™ provides an approved Fire and Gas Safety Solution that covers Safety Instrumented System requirements as part of the Mitigation Safety Layer described in the IEC 61508, IEC 61511 and ANSI/ISA S84.01 standards.

Safety Manager fire and gas safety system is designed to detect hazards like fires or gas leakage’s in a fast and accurate way by using connections of a wide range of F&G detector devices. On detection system will perform the appropriate safety actions automatically and will alert about the detected hazard(s) in most efficient way.

Safety Manager supports standard connection of Fire and Gas detector devices of most major F&G field device suppliers. The supported connections are proven in use and/or are fully tested as part of the MVIP test program. For signal handling inside Safety Manager of these connected F&G devices, special function blocks are developed to create an optimum response from these devices. For connection of the devices special interfaces are developed to achieve the optimum connection.

Available interfaces are:

• TSGASH-1624 Fail-safe Gas/Flame detector input FTA with HART interface.

TSFIRE-1624 Fail-safe Fire detector input FTA

In the Safety Manager Guides an approved basic Fire and Gas Safety application is included. This application provides a Fire and Gas Safety Solution that can easily be integrated into Honeywell’s Experion™ PKS, Honeywell’s TotalPlant Solution (TPS) system or into Honeywell’s PlantScape system. The basic application can be developed and adjusted easily to design a project specific Fire and Gas Safety Solution.

The integrated layer of the F&G solution within Experion, TPS or PlantScape contains the integrated alarm listing and safety historian functionality that records all detected alarms, all actions initiated by the F&G Safety system and all actions executed by this system or connected integrated sub-systems. This layer also shows the actual situation of the F&G application by using overall plant displays and various detailed area displays that contain locations and actual status of all connected F&G field detectors.

The Dual Modular Redundant (DMR) architecture provides 1oo2 voting in a nonredundant system. The DMR architecture with 1oo2 voting is based on dualprocessor technology, and is characterized by a high level of self tests, diagnostics and fault tolerance.

The DMR architecture is realized with a non-redundant Controller. A nonredundant architecture contains only one QPP (see Figure 11), which contains a redundant processor with 1oo2 voting between the processors and memory.

Bently Nevada 3500/01-01 - Advanced Industrial Automation Solution

3500/22M TRANSIENT DATA INTERFACE

Description

The 3500/22M Transient Data Interface (TDI) is the interface between the 3500 monitoring system and compatible software (System 1 Condition Monitoring and Diagnostic software and 3500 System Configuration software). The TDI combines the function of a 3500/20 Rack Interface Module (RIM) with the data collection capability of a communication processor such as TDXnet.

The TDI resides in the slot adjacent to the power supplies of a 3500 rack. It interfaces with M series monitors (3500/40M, 3500/42M, etc.) to continuously collect steady state and transient dynamic (waveform) data and pass this data through an Ethernet link to the host software. Refer to the Compatibility section at the end of this document for more information.

Static data capture capability is standard with the TDI. However, using an optional Channel Enabling Disk will allow the TDI to capture dynamic and high-resolution transient data as well. The TDI incorporates the communication processor function within the 3500 rack.

Although the TDI provides certain functions common to the entire rack, it is not part of the critical monitoring path and has no effect on the proper, normal operation of the overall monitor system for automatic machinery protection. Every 3500 rack requires one TDI or RIM, which always occupies Slot 1 (next to the power supplies).

I/O Module Signal Common Terminal

Both versions of the TDI I/O Module now include a 2-pin connector for connecting Signal Common to a single point Instrument Ground for the rack. When this is done, the selector switch on the side of the Power Input Module (PIM) must be slid in the direction of the arrow marked “HP” to isolate Signal Common from chassis (safety) ground.

3500 22M Dynamic Data Enabling Disk

This disk enables the number of channels of dynamic data (i.e., the ability to collect waveforms) that the TDI will support. There are two levels of dynamic data. Steady-State points are channels that collect waveform data due either to a software command or to an alarm event, and therefore support current values, scheduled waveform capture, and alarm data capture. Transient points provide all the function of a Steady-State point with the additional capability of waveform collection due to parameter variations such as machine speed.
